Fix : Built-in Adminstrator Account No Longer Create Folder

The built-in Administrator account can no longer create folders in OneDrive for Business when syncing.

"A warning is displayed saying that the built-in Administrator account cannot create folders because permissions have been adjusted," Microsoft stated.

Until a resolution is found, a managed administrator needs to create a new Office 365 group and add the user account that previously had folder creation privileges to that group. "Once this has been done, the user will be able to share their OneDrive for Business with one more collaborator."

When creating new files or folders, right click on the file or folder you want to create and select Sharing -> Guest Access > OK .

You will get a quick prompt from OneDrive asking if you confirm adding guest access. Select yes and confirm specifying the date of expiration.

This is an issue that was introduced with version 1806 of the Windows 10, the April 2018 Update. As a workaround you can use the Netplwiz utility to create new administrative accounts which will allow you to create new folders.

This small but highly irritating change has been implemented with an update. The Admins are now limited to creating folders in the root of their site, not in the root of other sites.

Some computer accounts used to have an Administrative account. These were created to help people set up the computer. It gave them access to the computer's files and folders. For example, they could change settings such as the screen resolution. If you try to create a new folder using this account, the following error message will appear: "Folder could not be created because there are no administrative accounts available".

You will receive this error message if the account is disabled or the account is expired.

If you try to create a folder using the root account, the following error message will appear: "Access is denied. You do not have permission to perform this action or access this resource."

This message will be displayed if the user account is disabled, the user account is expired, or if the account is locked.

You can also create a new account with the following command: netplwiz.exe /createaccount.

You can check if the account has administrative rights using the following command: netplwiz.exe /adminstatus. The following screenshot shows the result of the command:

The user account is now an administrative account. To access the files and folders in the root of the OneDrive for Business site, the user needs to use the new account that has administrative rights.

This is a great improvement because this account has a lot more access than the previous built-in account.

This is a highly annoying change. The built-in Administrator account used to have a lot of privileges, such as creating folders in the root of other sites.

When syncing files to the OneDrive for Business site, the user will get a prompt asking if they want to add guest access to their site. Select yes and select the date when the guest access will expire. If you do not want to use the new account with administrative rights, you can use the following command to create a new account with the default Administrator account: netplwiz.exe /createaccount /password=“PASSWORD”.

This will create a new user account with the default Administrator account.

This is a highly annoying change. The previous built-in Administrator account had a lot of privileges. Now the new Administrator account has a lot more privileges.

This change was implemented with an update.

The user is now limited to creating folders in the root of their folders, not in the root of other folder.
